Who gets to determine which websites should be allowed in a school district? I have had some students wondering why we were unable to access YouTube or Facebook within the school? These are two of the websites that come to mind that could be an amazing teaching tool if utilized in the appropriate manner. On the other hand, there are many things that could possibly go wrong with the use of the Internet.
I am wondering who gets to make the choices on which websites are allowed for the use of the school? Where do they get their information from and who do they have to get it approved by?
In our district it is decided by the upper admin and technology department. That is the way most schools in our county handle it here in Michigan. We have encountered a few problems with websites that are completely fine, being blocked, but usually it just takes an email to our tech guy and it gets unblocked. I ran into this problem when working on a research project with my 7th grade Social Studies class.
ReplyDeleteThat would be nice if it was that easy for me in my district. I teach in a large city school district in Upstate New York and I tried to get an answer of how to get a website unlocked and they still have not given me a clear concise answer.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the advise.
